Specialized and happy — also in Germany

Montse was born and raised in Mexico,...

...she studied at the Universidad Veracruzana for three years from 2012 to 2015. After that, she did another year of social service. What she loves about her job is helping other people. Thanks to Talent Orange, she now works as a nurse in the nephrology department at the Karlsruhe Municipal Hospital.

Why did you want to work abroad?

Montse: I wanted to work abroad to have a better income and to be able to help my family. With the higher income I earn here in Germany, I can support my family in Mexico.

What is the difference between your job in your home country and your job here in Germany?

Montse: Here it's more about the general care of patients. That means treating patients' wounds, administering medication and assisting doctors. You also wash and feed the patients and position them if they can't move themselves. In Mexico it is all about specialized care. After the bachelor's degree, it is possible to attend a specialization course. For example, you can continue your education in pre-natal care, infant care, geriatric care, rehabilitation, ambulatory care, neurology, mental health, oncology, care of patients with kidney disease and pre-surgical care.

Are you doing any further training?

Montse: Not just yet. Although the focus in Germany is on general patient care, there are also opportunities to specialize. For example, I want to do further training in hemodialysis. Hemodialysis is a treatment for people who have had kidney failure. It is also called renal replacement therapy. Here, the blood gets cleaned outside the body with a technical device and then flows back into the body. That means the device is taking over the function of the kidney. With this further training, I can then support the doctors doing kidney replacement therapy.

What exciting things have you experienced so far?

Montse: The orientation period at the hospital was definitely a challenge for me. During my first days of work at the hospital, I didn't know how everything worked on the ward. I didn't know the procedures and my vocabulary was limited. But now I know my way around and have even improved my German.

Apart from that, I've traveled to three European countries.

That was really great! I gained many new impressions and experiences.

Thank you Montse!
