Alma's experience:
Traveling the world as a nurse.

Alma Nieto Dominguez was born in Madrid...

...After graduating high school, she decided to go to university for a radiology degree. During one of her internships at a Spanish university hospital she stumbled upon the project that would ultimately bring her to Germany.

More than six years later she is visiting the TalentOrange offices in Frankfurt and speaks about her experiences since then. In 2017 she acquired her nursing degree in Germany.

Can you remember when you first contemplated leaving Spain for Germany to work there?

„I still remember like it was yesterday that I couldn’t believe trainees for positions in the health care sector were wanted in Germany. That I could potentially get very good job offers there, and that I wouldn’t have to carry any of the costs for the project with the University hospital Frankfurt am Main myself. Before that I had never even considered learning German, let alone moving to Germany.“

What kind of project was that?

„An integrated nursing degree program composed of a traineeship with a subsequent university degree (B.Sc.) in Germany. A pilot project, for which TalentOrange (then named CapitalentMedical) aided the University hospital in their selection of personnel.“

„Fulfilling your dreams can work in the healthcare sector too.“

And you were selected?

Alma: „Yes. After meeting with Dr. Frank in Madrid for my interview I received my acceptance. I was in! That meant packing my bags and really leaving home for the first time. I successfully finished the three-year-long traineeship as well as the four-year university course. After that I stayed at the University hospital and worked there as a registered nurse. In June 2019 I decided to take some time off to finally travel the world. Fulfilling your dreams can work in the health care sector too. For that I am very grateful.”

Where were you when you noticed the first restrictions because of the pandemic?

Alma: „I was in Myanmar – nowadays hard to believe. My flight back to Spain was canceled three times. I didn’t really know what I wanted to do after my travels, where I wanted to work or live. But when the first flight back went through Frankfurt am Main, I took it as a sign.“

So you came back to Germany?

Alma:  „Yes. Spain had been my first choice mostly because I didn’t know what to make of the situation yet and because I had wanted to see my parents. But then everything else took its course. Currently I am working in the Ketteler hospital in Offenbach am Main, where I enjoy working with great colleagues."

And how do you feel in your new apartment?

Alma: „I have always felt at home here. I like Frankfurt and its inhabitants. I have learned a lot – especially about myself. But the fact that I now have an apartment of my own for the first time, close to the Main, that really makes me feel like I have finally found a home here after six years.“
